Georgia residents in the University of Southern Indiana's online NP programs
Every online nursing program at the University of Southern Indiana is open to Georgia residents, and USI's licensure table marks each NP route as meeting Georgia's educational requirements. Georgia's board leaves graduate programs unregulated, but it is specific about licenses: yours, your faculty's and, for APRN students, the Georgia authorization of whoever gives your clinical instruction.

Georgia's board: hands off the program, firm on licenses
Georgia's nursing board sits inside the Secretary of State's office, and graduate education lies outside its remit: programs for nurses who already hold a license, APRN programs among them, get neither approval nor oversight from it. So USI files nothing with the board to place you. Licensure is where the board draws firm lines, in three places:
- You: every Georgia clinical hour rests on a Georgia RN license or on a compact license that another member state issued you.
- Faculty and preceptors: the same license test covers everyone who teaches you in Georgia, whether in the room or over a screen.
- APRN clinical instruction: for graduate APRN students, the board wants the clinical teaching done by a nurse whose APRN authorization Georgia itself granted.
That third point matters. USI's rules let FNP and AGACNP students train with physician assistants and physicians (see our PA and physician preceptor page), and PMHNP students with psychiatrists. In Georgia, confirm with the Graduate Clinical Liaison how USI squares a non-APRN preceptor with the board's wording before you ask one to sign.
Restricted practice and the Atlanta-centered search
AANP rates Georgia restricted: NPs practice with physician delegation or supervision, and their Schedule II prescribing runs inside tight limits. Your NP preceptor will be working under a physician arrangement, which shapes how orders and prescriptions flow in the clinic you join.
Most Georgia searches begin in the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell metro, about 6.5 million strong, then move to Augusta, Savannah and Columbus. Among large employers, Wellstar Health System and Piedmont Healthcare sit alongside Grady Health System, Emory Healthcare and Northside Hospital. They illustrate where Georgia NPs practice; none has an arrangement to host USI students.
Georgia does reward preceptors through a state tax credit, the Preceptor Tax Incentive Program, open to Georgia-licensed physicians, dentists, APRNs and PAs who teach in community settings; HB 144 revised and extended it. Only students from Georgia's own medical, dental, NP and PA programs count toward it, so a USI rotation sits outside the credit.
Licenses at the Alabama and South Carolina edges
Georgia nurses have carried multistate licenses since the compact's January 2018 start; the APRN Compact, however, is not Georgia law. Two metros cross state lines: Augusta reaches into South Carolina, a compact state USI enrolls, and Columbus reaches into Alabama, a compact state whose residents USI does not admit to its NP tracks. USI's MSN sets no on-campus immersion, but faculty may ask a student to travel to Evansville to show clinical competency, so keep that possibility in your calendar.

Questions USI students ask
Is USI's online FNP program open to Georgia residents?
Yes. Georgia is absent from every Enrollment Not Allowed list in USI's disclosure, and the MSN FNP row says the program meets Georgia's educational requirements. The FNP program guide explains the 750 direct hours across NRSG 643, NRSG 645 and NRSG 647.
Must USI get Georgia board approval before I start clinicals?
No. Georgia's board leaves programs for already-licensed nurses, APRN programs among them, outside its approval and regulation. It sets licensure conditions instead: yours, those of your faculty and preceptors, and Georgia APRN authorization for whoever gives your clinical instruction. USI approves your preceptor and site on its own track.
Does precepting a USI student count toward Georgia's preceptor tax credit?
It does not. The credit is tied to rotations for students of Georgia's own medical, dental, NP and PA schools, so USI rotations sit outside it. A preceptor who also hosts students from a Georgia program can still claim it for those rotations, with yearly registration required from 2026.
Could my USI clinical site be in South Carolina, near Augusta?
South Carolina is a compact state and one USI enrolls, so a Georgia multistate license generally covers a South Carolina site. USI must approve the preceptor and site and hold a signed Clinical Education Agreement first. The South Carolina guide covers that state's own rules.
