Iowa clinicals for University of Southern Indiana nursing students
Iowa residents may enroll in any online University of Southern Indiana nursing program, and USI marks its NP routes as meeting Iowa's requirements. Iowa is a full-practice state, yet its board spells out duties for out-of-state programs: approval from the state's college-aid agency, Iowa-ready clinical contracts, and preceptors licensed for Iowa.

What Iowa asks of an out-of-state program
Iowa's board leaves out-of-state schools unapproved but not unregulated: its page for them attaches four conditions to any clinical time in Iowa.
Iowa's list for out-of-state nursing programs
- Clearance from the Bureau of Iowa College Aid to run programs in Iowa
- Obedience to Iowa's laws as well as the rules back home, and data handed over whenever the board requests it
- Active Iowa or multistate licensure for every nursing faculty member and preceptor working with students in Iowa
- Written clinical contracts covering who does what, the faculty's say over what students learn, a review every year and how the contract ends
Our research could not confirm USI's status with that bureau. Raise it with the Graduate Clinical Liaison before you build an Iowa plan. On USI's side, the Clinical Education Agreement is the contract a site signs, and USI and the site settle its terms.
Full practice, ARNPs and who can precept you
AANP lists Iowa as full practice, and Iowa titles its nurse practitioners ARNPs. Under 481 IAC 616.16, an ARNP student in Iowa should train mostly beside ARNPs or physicians who share the student's role and population, each licensed in the state where they practice, and the written preceptorship agreement is revisited yearly. The program and the clinical facility approve Iowa preceptors.
That fits USI's standard, which adds board certification in your specialty and a year as an advanced practice provider, and limits PMHNP students to a PMHNP or psychiatrist (USI's rules). One wrinkle: Iowa's rule names ARNPs and physicians, not PAs. If a PA would carry most of your FNP or AGACNP hours in Iowa, ask USI how it applies the rule first.
Licensing, and the Quad Cities catch
Iowa insists that post-licensure students training there hold a current Iowa or multistate license. Its student exemption in Iowa Code 152.1 stops short of anyone who already holds a nursing license, so your RN license is what lets you practice. Iowa has been part of the compact since its 2018 rollout, so multistate licenses from Iowa, Indiana and the other member states all work at Iowa sites.

Questions USI students ask
Can I do USI's online PMHNP program from Iowa?
Yes. Iowa is not on the MSN PMHNP enrollment ban, and USI's table says the program meets Iowa's requirements; the certificate and BSN-to-DNP PMHNP routes read the same way. Clinicals must be with a PMHNP or a licensed psychiatrist, largely in outpatient settings, and telehealth can supply no more than 150 of the 750 hours.
Does USI have to register with Iowa before my clinicals?
Iowa's page for out-of-state schools makes clearance from the Bureau of Iowa College Aid one of their obligations. Whether USI has that approval on file is a question for the Graduate Clinical Liaison, and it is worth asking before you start approaching Iowa preceptors.
Will I have to travel to Evansville during the program?
USI's MSN has no fixed on-campus immersion. Its roles page does say students may be required to come to campus to demonstrate clinical competency, so leave some give in your calendar. Faculty can also check your skills through site visits, conference calls with your preceptor and video recordings.
Can an Iowa preceptor earn continuing education credit for teaching me?
Yes, under Iowa's renewal rules. A nurse who gives a student 60 or more hours in an organized preceptorship can claim six contact hours toward renewing an Iowa license, as long as the school supervising the student documents it. A preceptor who wants that credit can ask USI's Nursing Clinical Coordinator (usi1nursing@usi.edu) what record it can provide.
