USI's disclosure answer for Alaska
The nursing table in USI's Professional Licensure Disclosure, marked "Updated Fall 2025", gives Alaska a clean row. Every nurse practitioner program meets Alaska's educational requirements, and Alaska sits in none of the "Enrollment Not Allowed" cells, so residents can apply to any track. The Alaska policy: USI picks, you apply to the Board
The Graduate Nursing Handbook carries a short section titled Policy for Graduate Nursing Students Residing in Alaska. Its core line: "Students may not independently select preceptors." The USI graduate nursing program makes the choice, and the person it picks must hold at least a graduate degree with appropriate credentials.
Everywhere else you line up your own preceptor and site for the Graduate Clinical Liaison to approve. In Alaska that search comes off your list, and the Board takes its place: APRN students apply to the Alaska State Board of Nursing for a preceptorship, pay its registration fee, and start that application themselves. Nursing Education Leadership and Healthcare Systems Leadership students skip the Board's prior authorization for their practicums.

What Alaska's Board of Nursing asks of APRN students
Alaska registers the student rather than approving the school. Regulation 12 AAC 44.460 covers anyone whose out-of-state APRN program brings them into an Alaska clinic, and the vehicle is form 08-4253, the APRN Preceptorship Registration.
The registration asks for
- Evidence that your RN license is in good standing; Alaska or any other state may have issued it
- Confirmation that you are enrolled right now in APRN coursework
- The signed arrangement tying USI, the facility, you and the preceptor together, which the Board reviews and approves
Each registration dies at the 12-month mark or when the preceptorship wraps up, if that comes sooner, and the Board permits a single renewal. The form screens the preceptor too. It looks for an APRN or a physician whose license or privilege is active and carries no encumbrance, who works in the same kind of practice you are training for, and who personally oversees, instructs and grades you on site.
Practice, places and licensing in Alaska
AANP rates Alaska a full practice state for NPs. Anchorage is the largest metro at roughly 406,000 people, well ahead of Fairbanks-College and the Juneau micropolitan area. In Anchorage, Providence Alaska Medical Center belongs to the state's largest hospital operator and Alaska Native Medical Center is run by the tribal health system; HCA owns Alaska Regional Hospital. Mat-Su Regional serves Palmer, and Foundation Health Partners runs Fairbanks Memorial Hospital. Those are where Alaska's clinicians work; the choosing stays with USI.
Alaska has never joined the Nurse Licensure Compact; HB 131 and SB 124, the membership bills of the 2025-2026 session, still show as pending on the Board's site. A compact license from Indiana or anywhere else buys you nothing in Alaska, and USI insists on a clear RN license in every state that hosts your hours. Budget time for that Alaska license. For FNP and PMHNP telehealth hours, licensure follows the patient.

Questions USI students ask
Can a physician assistant precept a USI student in Alaska?
Expect an APRN or a physician. USI accepts PAs for FNP and AGACNP students in other states, but the Alaska Board's form only contemplates APRN and physician preceptors, and USI's program makes every Alaska selection anyway. PMHNP students always need a PMHNP or a licensed psychiatrist. Our PA preceptor guide covers the general rule.
Does USI's Alaska policy cover the online RN-to-BSN?
The policy is written for graduate students. USI's RN-to-BSN handbook has students pick practice sites near home that fit each course. The Alaska Board asks RN-to-BS distance students for two things only: a program with national accreditation and approval where the school is based, plus a current US RN license with no encumbrance. Confirm the details with your course faculty.
Will one Board registration last through all three specialty semesters?
Check before you assume. The registration lapses at 12 months or when the preceptorship ends, and it can be renewed only once. A Fall start runs to the end of Summer, close to a full year, and whether a change of preceptor between courses opens a new preceptorship is a question for the Board. Set the answers beside USI's clinical deadlines.
Is a multistate RN license enough for clinicals in Alaska?
Not for USI. Alaska has kept clear of the compact, leaving whatever multistate license you hold today without standing there. The Board's registration will take a good-standing RN license from any state, yet USI's rule ties your license to the state where the patients are, and for an Alaska clinic that means holding an Alaska RN license.
