Kansas and the University of Southern Indiana: NP clinicals under KSBN's rules
Kansans can enroll in any online nursing program the University of Southern Indiana offers, and USI's table says every nurse practitioner route meets Kansas's education rules. The Kansas State Board of Nursing adds its own expectations for the preceptor and for your license, then looks hard at your program once you seek Kansas APRN licensure.

USI's Professional Licensure Disclosure, dated "Updated Fall 2025", keeps Kansas off every "Enrollment Not Allowed" list and marks each APRN program as meeting Kansas requirements.

What KSBN expects of an out-of-state APRN student
Kansas publishes an unusually direct sheet for online APRN programs based elsewhere. In the order it reaches you:
- Before you enroll: nothing to clear. The board runs no approval process for these programs; scrutiny comes at licensure.
- In the clinic: your RN license, whether a multistate compact license or a Kansas-only one, is what you practice on, as an APRN student; the board points to K.S.A. 65-1124 for that status.
- Your preceptor: given an orientation, bound by a signed agreement, and licensed as a Kansas APRN in the same role as your track, per the regulation the board cites, K.A.R. 60-17-104.
- Faculty: online teaching needs no Kansas license, and Kansas sets no site-visit requirement.
- At licensure: a nationally accredited program, a 45-credit floor, three credits apiece in advanced pathophysiology, pharmacology and health assessment, and clinical hours in the role and specialty: 750 if you started after March 1, 2025, or 500 if earlier.
USI's 2026-27 NP tracks carry 750 direct hours, matching the newer Kansas number. The credit line needs a second look: USI's catalog lists the MSN NP tracks at 44 credits against KSBN's 45, while USI's table still says the programs meet Kansas requirements. If a Kansas APRN license is the goal, ask the Graduate Chair and APRN Director how USI squares the two.
Full practice, with a Kansas-licensed APRN at your elbow
Kansas NPs diagnose and prescribe with no physician contract; AANP files the state under full practice. The board's sheet points your preceptor search toward APRNs licensed in Kansas in your own role. USI's rules also admit physician assistants and physicians for FNP and AGACNP students (the PA and physician preceptor page explains the split), so check with USI before a Kansas packet names anyone who is not an APRN.
Where to look: greater Kansas City counts about 2.27 million people, some 938,000 of them in Kansas, and after it come Wichita, Topeka and Manhattan. Big employers include The University of Kansas Health System; Topeka's Stormont Vail Health; and, in Wichita, both Ascension Via Christi and Wesley Healthcare, an HCA hospital. They show where Kansas NPs work, not where USI has an arrangement. No Kansas preceptor incentive appears in our research.
Licenses, compacts and the Missouri side of Kansas City
Kansas nurses have held multistate licenses since July 1, 2019, a year and a half after the January 2018 group. The APRN Compact, by contrast, is not on Kansas's books. A Kansas-issued multistate RN license reaches the other compact states, including Missouri, where the Kansas City metro carries on across the state line. USI enrolls Missourians too, so a site there is an ordinary choice once approved.
USI wants that license unencumbered wherever you train; for FNP and PMHNP telehealth, the patient's location decides which license counts. The RN license guide has the rest.

Questions USI students ask
Does KSBN have to sign off on USI before I start clinicals in Kansas?
No. KSBN's guidance for online APRN programs from other states describes no formal approval before Kansans enroll. The board examines the program later, as each graduate files for a Kansas APRN license, looking at coursework, accreditation, credits and clinical hours. USI still needs its own Clinical Education Agreement with your site.
Will my USI degree qualify me for a Kansas APRN license?
On education, USI's disclosure answers yes for every NP route, and the 2026-27 hour total fits KSBN's newer figure. The one point to settle first is the credit gap described above, 44 in USI's MSN catalog entry against KSBN's 45; the Graduate Chair and APRN Director can tell you how USI reads it.
Can a physician assistant precept my USI FNP clinicals in Kansas?
USI allows PAs and primary care physicians for FNP rotations. KSBN's sheet, though, looks for a preceptor who is a Kansas-licensed APRN in that same role. Put that question to the Graduate Clinical Liaison before a PA's name goes on your Preceptor Packet.
Could my USI rotation be in Kansas City, Missouri?
Often, yes. Missouri is a compact state too, which lets a Kansas multistate license work there, and USI enrolls Missouri residents. The site still needs USI's approval and a Clinical Education Agreement before your first hour; the Missouri guide covers that state's rules.
Will USI faculty visit my Kansas clinical site?
USI faculty schedule site visits as needed and also check competency through calls with your preceptor. Kansas does not require faculty visits at all, and KSBN says a faculty member who does come attends as a visitor or lay person.
