Michigan clinicals for University of Southern Indiana NP students
Michigan residents may enroll in all of the University of Southern Indiana's online nursing programs, and USI's disclosure says each NP route meets Michigan's educational requirements. The step that trips people up is the license: Michigan is not a Nurse Licensure Compact member, which means every clinical hour logged in Michigan rests on a Michigan RN license.

What USI's disclosure lists for Michigan
Michigan appears on none of the "Enrollment Not Allowed for Residents of These States" lists in USI's table, which is dated "Updated Fall 2025". Every APRN row puts Michigan under Meets Requirements.

USI's page adds that states may set non-academic licensure conditions it cannot judge. Michigan has several, starting with the RN license itself, and its NP certification sits on top of that license.
A Michigan RN license comes first
USI wants your RN license unencumbered in each state where you train. Because Michigan is outside the Nurse Licensure Compact (NCSBN's map shows bill HB 4246 as pending), a multistate license from Indiana, Ohio or any other member state gives no privilege to practice in Michigan. If you live and work in Michigan, you likely hold one already; an Indiana resident hoping to train across the northern line would need to add one.
Michigan attaches three extra conditions to its RN license: a criminal background check, a one-time course in recognizing people who are being trafficked, and implicit bias training (two hours) finished inside the five-year window before your license is granted. Build that lead time in, because USI verifies the license number and state you write on the Preceptor Packet before approving anything.
Telehealth works the same way in reverse. FNP and PMHNP students seeing patients located in Michigan need a Michigan license wherever the clinic sits; the RN license guide walks through it.
Michigan's practice rules and your preceptor
AANP classes Michigan as restricted, noting that controlled-substance prescribing by an NP depends on a physician's delegation. A Michigan NP can still teach you the whole visit, but at that practice, controlled-substance orders run through a delegating physician.
To hold Michigan's NP specialty certification, a nurse must already have an active Michigan RN license and national board certification from a body Michigan accepts. Checking a Michigan NP's specialty certification therefore confirms the state RN license and the national credential in one look; you still match the population focus to your USI track. Board rules, systems and incentives in Michigan
Our research turned up no Michigan requirement that an Indiana school register with the board, or tell it anything, before its students start clinicals. Michigan's program-approval rules govern in-state schools; for an out-of-state graduate, accreditation (ACEN, CNEA or CCNE) is what Michigan looks at when licensing. The board was not contacted, so if a site raises the question, route it to the Graduate Clinical Liaison.
Search areas include metro Detroit (Detroit-Warren-Dearborn), Grand Rapids, Lansing-East Lansing and Flint. Large systems there include Corewell Health and Henry Ford Health, Michigan Medicine (University of Michigan Health), plus Trinity Health Michigan and McLaren Health Care. Each runs its own student intake; naming them maps where NP care is, not where USI students are expected.
Michigan's one recorded preceptor incentive, a pilot the MDHHS Office of Nursing Programs ran with Michigan State University's College of Nursing, has ended and only ever served MSU's FNP and PMHNP students. No enacted Michigan tax credit for precepting was located.

Questions USI students ask
Can I use my Indiana multistate license for clinicals in Michigan?
No. Outside the compact, Michigan gives multistate licenses from Indiana or anywhere else no effect. USI requires a valid, unencumbered license for every state that hosts your clinicals, so you would obtain a Michigan RN license first, allowing time for the background check and the two trainings Michigan asks for.
Is USI's online PMHNP program open to Michigan residents?
Yes. None of USI's three psychiatric routes (MSN, certificate, BSN-to-DNP) lists Michigan on its enrollment ban, and each is marked as meeting Michigan's requirements. Your preceptors must be a PMHNP or a licensed psychiatrist, and telehealth may supply up to 150 of the 750 hours. The PMHNP program page covers the courses.
Does Michigan require USI to get approval before I train there?
Nothing in the research for this page suggests Michigan wants a separate filing from USI before placements begin, since its approval rules are written for Michigan schools. Your site still signs a Clinical Education Agreement with USI, and the Graduate Clinical Liaison approves every preceptor before your first hour.
Is there a Michigan tax credit for NP preceptors?
None that our research found. Michigan's recorded incentive was a finished MDHHS pilot limited to preceptors working with MSU nurse practitioner students, so it never covered out-of-state programs. What a Michigan preceptor gets from a USI student who works with us is an organized start: a typed packet, a clear hour plan and a known faculty contact schedule.
