What USI's disclosure says for Indiana
USI's Professional Licensure Disclosure, marked Updated Fall 2025, gives Indiana the simplest row in the table. Every program that prepares you for an APRN license is listed as meeting Indiana's educational requirements, and no program's Enrollment Not Allowed cell names Indiana, so residents may apply to any online track.

The page's one Indiana-only line, about students admitted since July 1, 2024 to licensure programs completed on campus, is written for campus programs such as the BSN. If you might leave Indiana partway through, read relocating during the program first: a move to a state USI does not recognize ends online coursework unless you are on active military status.
Evansville, the Kinney College and clinicals near home
USI's campus lies along the Lloyd Expressway west of Evansville, on Central Time, and graduate nursing belongs to the Kinney College of Nursing and Health Professions, whose nursing faculty are based in the Health Professions Center. Newer USI pages brand the nursing department the Coudret Nursing Program.
The online MSN, certificate and DNP tracks send clinical hours to where you live. USI's Graduate Nursing Handbook makes finding preceptors and sites in your own community the student's task, and the Graduate Clinical Liaison approves each one before a single hour counts. The rule reads the same in Newburgh as in Fort Wayne, Merrillville or Jeffersonville.
Travel to Evansville is not built into the MSN calendar: there is no scheduled on-campus immersion, but faculty can ask a student to come to campus to demonstrate clinical competency, so leave room for a possible drive; the campus competency visits page explains when that happens. The campus BSN's hospital partnerships and Dedicated Education Units serve undergraduates, while graduate students arrange their own sites.
Indiana's NP practice law in brief
AANP rates Indiana a reduced-practice state because every nurse practitioner there works in a regulated collaboration. Indiana Code 25-23-1-19.4(c) lets an APRN operate either through a practice agreement with a licensed practitioner or through privileges from a hospital's governing board. The section was last amended in 2020, and the 2026 code offers no route out of collaboration after a set number of practice hours.
Paperwork follows prescribing. Under the board's rule at 848 IAC 5-2-1, an NP needs a written practice agreement only to seek prescriptive authority, and IPLA describes the Indiana APRN license as prescribing authority rather than permission to practice as an NP. An NP who never prescribes works on an Indiana RN license or a compact RN license.
If your NP preceptor prescribes, expect them to hold a practice agreement with a collaborating practitioner, an Indiana controlled substance registration and a DEA number, and each of those touches what you see in clinic. The Indiana State Board of Nursing, IPLA and graduate students
The Indiana State Board of Nursing makes the rules and the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency (IPLA) administers licensing for it. The board approves Indiana's prelicensure programs, the ones preparing students for an initial LPN or RN license, and, per its education page, neither RN-BSN tracks nor graduate nursing programs come under its review.
That split shapes your status as a student. Indiana's student exemption, IC 25-23-1-27.1(b)(2), covers nursing incidental to study in a board-approved program, and graduate programs are not board-approved, so the careful reading is that an NP student practices on an active RN license, Indiana single-state or multistate. USI asks for exactly that: an unencumbered RN license in each state that hosts your clinical hours.
Your preceptor's approval runs through USI, not the board. The Graduate Clinical Liaison checks each preceptor against USI's own standard, which admits physicians and PAs for the FNP and AGACNP tracks and only a PMHNP or psychiatrist for PMHNP students.
Licensing, the compact and Zachary's Law
Indiana's compact statute took effect July 1, 2019, and NCSBN dates Indiana's implementation of the Nurse Licensure Compact to July 1, 2020. A multistate license with Indiana as home state reaches Kentucky, a member since 2018, but not Illinois, where no compact bill is pending. USI words its rule as a license in each clinical state, so confirm a multistate privilege with the Nursing Clinical Coordinator; the RN license guide has the details. Indiana has not joined the separate APRN Compact, which is not yet operating.
FNP and PMHNP students counting telehealth hours need a license for the state where each patient sits during the visit. A practice near the Ohio River may see Kentucky patients by video, so confirm the patient's location before you log the encounter.
Zachary's Law concerns Indiana's sex-offender registry, and USI checks it for nursing students when they enter and at least once a year while they remain enrolled. Keep the renewal on your compliance calendar beside your BLS card and flu shot; the background check page covers the rest of clearance.
Evansville-area systems and their own rules
Hospital systems near campus publish conditions that sit on top of USI's approval rather than replacing it. Deaconess takes NP applications only from programs holding an active affiliation with it, says it is not seeking new affiliations, and ranks its own employees and local schools first. Its semester application and letter of introduction go by email, and approved rotations are then managed in myClinicalExchange.
Good Samaritan in Vincennes keeps a Nurse Practitioner student application inside myClinicalExchange, while Ascension St. Vincent Evansville posts no NP student process at all. The Evansville tri-state guide sets out each local system's dates, including Jasper, Washington and the Kentucky and Illinois sides of the river. Private practices post no student rules, so the conversation starts with the practice manager.
Indianapolis systems: three published processes
Indianapolis-Carmel-Greenwood is Indiana's largest metro, and three of its systems publish how NP students apply. Each process below is that system's own policy, as posted in September 2026, and none is a promise of a spot.

IU Health preceptors choose through May 1 for Fall, with notices by May 15; an unmatched student may look elsewhere, but one who arranges a placement around the process risks future denial. Another IU Health nursing page limits eligibility to students living and licensed in Indiana, without making clear whether that reaches NP students.
Community's affiliated-schools list, as of September 2026, names the University of Southern Indiana under Nursing without saying which programs it covers; ask usi1nursing@usi.edu before building a plan around it. Franciscan's form, dated 2020, asks whether you already have a Franciscan preceptor and calls its women's health and pediatric preceptors very limited. Beyond Indianapolis, students search around Fort Wayne and the Indiana edges of the Chicago and Louisville metros, and Parkview Health is another large Indiana system.

Questions USI students ask
Can Indiana residents enroll in every USI online nursing program?
Yes, going by USI's disclosure marked Updated Fall 2025. Indiana appears in none of the Enrollment Not Allowed cells, and every APRN program, whether an MSN track, a post-master's certificate or the BSN-to-DNP, is listed as meeting Indiana's requirements.
Does the Indiana State Board of Nursing approve USI's MSN?
Its approval is limited to prelicensure programs, the kind that end in a person's first LPN or RN license, which is why USI names the board only for its campus BSN. Graduate nursing programs, according to the board's education page, sit beyond its review. USI's master's, certificate and DNP programs in nursing are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education instead.
How do USI students apply for an IU Health clinical rotation?
Through IU Health's Office of Clinical Education, which takes applications in an online database each semester and lets its own preceptors choose students. The program needs an affiliation with IU Health, and the system asks students to skip cold calls and emails to its clinicians. Confirm with usi1nursing@usi.edu whether an agreement exists, then apply inside the window, which closes April 1 for Fall.
I live in northwest Indiana. Can I do USI clinicals across the line in Illinois?
You can look there, but plan on an Illinois RN license first, since Illinois is outside the Nurse Licensure Compact and an Indiana multistate license carries no privilege across the line. Illinois also has a rule requiring out-of-state programs to get approval before clinical placements, with an open question about graduate programs. The Illinois page covers both.
I live in Kentucky or Illinois. What license covers an Evansville site?
A Kentucky multistate license carries a privilege into Indiana because both states belong to the compact, though USI's rule asks for a license in each clinical state, so confirm the privilege with the Nursing Clinical Coordinator. An Illinois license is single-state and gives no Indiana privilege, so Illinois residents apply for an Indiana RN license through IPLA before their first Indiana hour.
