Who can precept you under Ohio's practice model
AANP files Ohio under reduced practice. Ohio NPs sign a standard care arrangement with a physician or podiatrist collaborator and keep one for as long as they practice, and the settings where they may prescribe Schedule II drugs are limited. Your Ohio NP preceptor's prescribing will reflect that arrangement, and the collaborating physician is part of how the office runs.
The detail worth raising early is Ohio's student exemption. Ohio Revised Code 4723.32(F) shelters APRN students acting under their program's auspices, on the condition that their supervisor is an APRN acting for that program as faculty, a teaching assistant or a preceptor. USI's FNP and AGACNP courses also accept physician assistants and physicians (see who qualifies), and PMHNP students may train with a psychiatrist. If your Ohio preceptor is not an APRN, ask the Graduate Clinical Liaison how USI reads that wording before the packet goes in.
No Ohio board filing for USI, and where students look
Ohio law adds no approval or notification step for an out-of-state program placing students in Ohio; the exemption above carries the load. The research behind this page did not check the Ohio Department of Higher Education's side, so if a site asks about USI's standing, send the question to the Graduate Clinical Liaison.
Ohio's big systems cluster in four metros: Cleveland, home to Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals; Columbus, where OhioHealth and Ohio State's Wexner Medical Center sit; Cincinnati, with Bon Secours Mercy Health; and the Dayton-Kettering-Beavercreek area. Treat them as places to look, each with its own student process, rather than sites set aside for USI students.

Your RN license for Ohio clinical hours
USI's rule is simple to state: your RN license must be unencumbered and valid for each state that hosts your hours. Ohio's compact membership took effect with the start of 2023, so a multistate license from Ohio, Indiana or Kentucky lets you practice at an Ohio site. The Ohio board tracks how many nurses work in the state on multistate licenses issued elsewhere.
Telehealth is the exception to watch. FNP and PMHNP students must be licensed where the patient is, so a practice that sees Michigan or Illinois patients by video pulls in a non-compact state. Questions USI students ask
Can I enroll in USI's online FNP program if I live in Ohio?
Yes. Ohio appears on none of the Enrollment Not Allowed lists in USI's Professional Licensure Disclosure (Updated Fall 2025), and the MSN FNP, AGACNP and PMHNP rows mark Ohio as meeting requirements. Ohio residents may also choose a post-master's certificate, a doctoral route, a leadership MSN or the RN-to-BSN. Recheck the page in the term you apply, since USI revises it.
Does a physician assistant count as a preceptor for USI clinicals in Ohio?
USI allows PAs in the FNP and AGACNP courses and never in PMHNP. Ohio's APRN student exemption, though, expects the person supervising you to be an APRN acting for the program. Before you commit to an Ohio PA or physician, ask the Graduate Clinical Liaison how USI handles that wording. An NP preceptor board-certified in your specialty avoids the question entirely.
Do I need a separate Ohio RN license for clinicals?
Usually not. Since 2023 Ohio has honored multistate licenses, so one issued by Indiana, Kentucky or Ohio itself works at an Ohio site. Illinois sits outside the compact, and an Illinois-only license gives you no Ohio privilege; an Illinois resident adds an Ohio license before the first clinical hour there.
Must USI get Ohio board approval before I start clinicals there?
Ohio's nursing law gives an out-of-state program nothing to file with the board first. Ohio Revised Code 4723.32 handles such students through its exemption, provided the supervision it describes is in place. Your site still signs a Clinical Education Agreement with USI, and USI approves the preceptor, before any hours count.
