Connecticut residents may join any online nursing program at the University of Southern Indiana, and USI's disclosure says each nurse practitioner curriculum satisfies Connecticut's education rules. Your clinical hours then run in Connecticut, a Nurse Licensure Compact state only since October 2025.

USI's answer for Connecticut, program by program
USI's Professional Licensure Disclosure, marked "Updated Fall 2025," leaves Connecticut out of every "Enrollment Not Allowed" cell in its nursing table. For each program that leads to an APRN license, Connecticut sits under "Meets Requirements," USI's judgment that the curriculum clears Connecticut's educational standards.

Precepting in Connecticut: full practice after a collaborative start
The AANP rates Connecticut a full practice state, with a condition: a newly licensed NP must log three years and 2,000 hours working alongside a collaborating physician before practicing alone. USI's own bar is a year as an advanced provider plus certification in your specialty, so an NP still inside that window can qualify; who can precept a USI student has the full standard.
Connecticut's nursing education regulations leave room for a program based elsewhere. Section 20-90-59 counts one from another state as "deemed approved" once that state's board has approved it and its standards are similar or higher. The chapter also sets preceptor-to-student ratios and calls for a written contract with each agency, but section 20-90-46 aims it at programs leading to initial licensure, with APRN education left unmentioned. USI's one-to-one precepting sits well inside those ratios anyway.
Where Connecticut NP students look for sites
Greater Hartford is the largest metro, with about 1.17 million people in 2025 Census estimates. The Bridgeport-Stamford-Danbury corridor follows with close to a million, then New Haven with more than half a million and Waterbury-Shelton with a bit under 465,000. Trinity Health Of New England runs sites in the state, as do UConn Health, Hartford HealthCare and Yale New Haven Health, all of them places to inquire rather than partners already taking USI students.
In the west, Danbury Hospital and other former Nuvance hospitals now sit under Northwell Health, whose base is in New York. For USI, the site's own state is what counts: a Northwell practice in Danbury is a Connecticut clinical under Connecticut rules.
New York and Massachusetts are harder: USI closes its MSN NP tracks to their residents, so clear any site across those borders with the Graduate Clinical Liaison first.
Your RN license: a compact that is brand new here
USI asks for an unencumbered RN license from every state that hosts your clinical hours. Since October 1, 2025, the Department of Public Health says, RN students may practice at Connecticut sites on a Connecticut license or on a multistate credential from another compact state they call home. The Board of Examiners for Nursing can tell you which kind you hold.
USI's handbook does not say how it treats compact privileges, so put that question to the Nursing Clinical Coordinator before you count on one; the RN license guide has the rule. Connecticut has not adopted the separate APRN Compact.
For FNP and PMHNP telehealth hours, USI ties your license to the patient's location, so video visits with New Yorkers (New York has no compact membership) or Massachusetts patients (its compact is not yet in effect) need a license from that state. The caps are on telehealth clinical hours.

Questions USI students ask
Is USI's online FNP open to Connecticut residents?
Yes. Connecticut appears on none of USI's Enrollment Not Allowed lists, and the Fall 2025 table marks the MSN FNP curriculum as meeting Connecticut's educational requirements. AGACNP and PMHNP read the same, as do the certificate and BSN-to-DNP versions of all three specialties. Recheck it before you apply, since USI revises it.
Does Connecticut require USI to get approval before my clinicals?
Connecticut's regulations describe no extra filing for a program approved by its home board; it is deemed approved. The state does expect a written contract between program and clinical agency, and for USI that is the Clinical Education Agreement the site signs (how it works).
Can an NP who has not finished Connecticut's collaboration period precept me?
Often, yes. USI's preceptor rule looks at license, certification and a minimum of one year as an advanced provider, not at a state's independent-practice status, so a Connecticut NP a year or more into the collaborative stretch can qualify. The Graduate Clinical Liaison decides each case, and the full standard is worth reading first.
Could I do my clinical hours in New York instead?
Proceed carefully. USI bars New York residents from its MSN NP tracks, and because New York never joined the Nurse Licensure Compact, a site there needs a New York RN license at minimum. The table addresses residence, not clinical location, so get an answer from the Graduate Clinical Liaison before you commit. The New York page has more.
