Maryland residents in USI's online nursing programs
Maryland is open to every University of Southern Indiana online nursing program. USI's licensure disclosure, stamped "Updated Fall 2025," puts no Maryland resident off-limits and credits each APRN curriculum with meeting Maryland's education rules. Three Maryland rules matter most: full NP practice authority, a licensure exemption for graduate APRN students, and Board review of each NP program before its graduates are certified.

What USI says about Maryland
Maryland reads cleanly on USI's disclosure: absent from every Enrollment Not Allowed list, and marked as met on every row that leads to APRN licensure. Three close neighbors do not share that result, since USI bars residents of Delaware, Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia from its MSN nurse practitioner tracks.

Nothing to file up front, a review at the end
Nothing in our research obliges USI to clear your Maryland clinicals with the Maryland Board of Nursing ahead of time; the Board treats programs from other states as a question about licensure, not about clinical sites. The Nurse Practice Act even carves graduate APRN students out of licensure for the advanced practice they perform inside an accredited program (Health Occupations § 8-301(d)(2)). Online enrollment is settled too, because Maryland's higher education registration rule exempts SARA schools such as USI.
Save your attention for graduation. Maryland certifies new NPs only from programs its Board has reviewed and approved, and when a program is absent from the Board's list, the school files the approval request itself. If you plan to certify in Maryland, check that list well before your final semester.
Full practice, the mentorship period and your preceptor
AANP scores Maryland as full practice. The string attached is a declared mentorship: 18 months, guided by a physician or a certified NP. Your preceptor may be partway through it or years past it, and USI's preceptor standards treat both the same.
PMHNP students need a PMHNP or a licensed psychiatrist, while FNP and AGACNP students may also learn from physicians and PAs, set out course by course on the PA and physician page.
Baltimore, the capital suburbs and a tax credit
Most Maryland students live in one of two big metros: Baltimore-Columbia-Towson, near 2.9 million people by 2025 Census estimates, or Maryland's share of Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, about 2.5 million more. Students ask at Johns Hopkins Medicine and MedStar Health, at LifeBridge Health and Luminis Health, and at the University of Maryland Medical System, each of which runs student requests its own way.
Maryland also offers an income tax credit for unpaid NP and physician preceptors (Tax-General § 10-739), tied to Board-approved preceptorships with at least three community-based rotations of 90 hours or more in shortage areas the health department designates. Because the law is written around NP programs the Board recognizes, our research could not settle whether a USI rotation qualifies; a preceptor who wants the credit should ask the Maryland Department of Health. It expires June 30, 2030.
Your RN license in and around Maryland
Maryland has honored the compact since January 19, 2018, and its regulations let a nurse holding a multistate privilege work under Maryland law. USI adds its own condition, an unencumbered RN license that covers each state where your clinical hours fall, explained in the RN license guide.
Telehealth hours in the FNP and PMHNP tracks need a license covering the patient's state. Virginia, West Virginia, Delaware and Pennsylvania are compact members; check any District of Columbia patient or site with the Nursing Clinical Coordinator first. Do the same for a Delaware or Pennsylvania site, because USI's NP tracks turn away residents of both.

Questions USI students ask
Is Maryland on any of USI's enrollment ban lists?
No. USI's Updated Fall 2025 table places no Maryland restriction on the MSN tracks, the post-master's certificates or the BSN-to-DNP, and marks each as meeting Maryland's requirements. Someone living in Delaware, Pennsylvania or the District of Columbia gets a different answer.
Will I be able to get APRN certification in Maryland after USI?
USI's table counts its APRN curricula as meeting Maryland's education standards, and Maryland can layer on other requirements. The Board's own list of approved NP programs is the thing to check; where a program is missing, its school files the approval request. Ask the Graduate Chair and APRN Director if USI does not appear there.
If Maryland exempts APRN students, do I still need a Maryland-valid license?
Yes, for USI's purposes. The statutory exemption covers the advanced practice you do within an accredited graduate program, but USI still looks for an RN license, clean and good in Maryland, when it verifies your Preceptor Packet. A Maryland license or a multistate one does the job.
Would moving from Maryland to Delaware or DC end my program?
It could. Both appear under Enrollment Not Allowed for USI's MSN NP tracks, and USI says a move to a state its graduate program does not recognize leaves you unable to continue coursework, active military aside.
