USI clinicals in West Virginia
West Virginia residents can enroll in any of the University of Southern Indiana's online nursing programs: USI's disclosure, labeled "Updated Fall 2025," names no West Virginia restriction and says each APRN track meets the state's educational requirements. Three local details shape the plan: the higher education commission, not the RN board, speaks for graduate clinicals; the license you need depends on where you live; and new NP prescribers spend three years in physician collaboration.

USI's disclosure for West Virginia
Every row of the nursing table agrees for West Virginia. Residents are barred from none of USI's programs, and each licensure-track row meets the state's requirements.

Pennsylvania, just north, sits on USI's ban list for the MSN NP tracks, the certificates and the BSN-to-DNP, so a move there would put NP enrollment at risk. The licensure disclosure guide lays out each list.
Two agencies, and which one speaks for you
West Virginia splits the oversight. Its Board of Registered Nurses deals only with pre-licensure education, and schools from elsewhere that bring pre-licensure students into West Virginia facilities apply to it first. Graduate programs are told to contact their national accreditor and the Higher Education Policy Commission, known as WVHEPC.
The commission's nursing education office answers the graduate question in its clinical rotation guide. An APRN program based outside West Virginia needs WVHEPC approval in two cases only: when its school has not joined NC-SARA, or when it plans to put 10 students or more at one site. USI holds NC-SARA membership, so only the head count could matter, and that is USI's concern, not yours.
Collaboration rules and your preceptor
AANP labels West Virginia reduced practice, and prescribing is where the limits bite: a West Virginia NP needs a physician collaboration agreement to prescribe for three years, and Schedule II narcotic prescriptions max out at three days' supply. A preceptor early in practice may still be inside that window, which shapes how medication decisions are taught at the site.
USI adds its own certification and experience rules on the preceptor requirements page. FNP and AGACNP students can widen a thin rural search by adding physicians and PAs; PMHNP students need a PMHNP or a licensed psychiatrist, as the PA and physician page explains.
Searching in a state of small metros
Charleston, the largest metro, counted only about 200,000 residents in 2025 Census estimates, so students here search wider. Huntington belongs to the Huntington-Ashland metro, which spans West Virginia, Kentucky and Ohio; Martinsburg is the West Virginia half of Hagerstown-Martinsburg; then Morgantown. Students write to WVU Medicine, to Marshall Health Network and to Vandalia Health (its members include Charleston Area Medical Center, Mon Health and Davis Health), as well as the Bureau for Public Health.

The license WVHEPC's guide expects
Compact licenses have counted in West Virginia since January 19, 2018, and the WVHEPC guide links your license to your home. Live in West Virginia and you need a current West Virginia RN license; live in another state and you bring a multistate one. Telehealth adds a twist for FNP and PMHNP students near the Kentucky, Ohio, Maryland and Virginia lines, since a video visit counts only if your license reaches the patient's state. And because USI may ask students to demonstrate competency on its Evansville campus, keep a trip west in your plans.

Questions USI students ask
Do I need a West Virginia RN license for USI clinicals there?
It depends on your home state. West Virginia residents train on a valid West Virginia license under the WVHEPC guide, and nonresidents use a multistate compact license. USI separately insists on an unencumbered license valid in every state where you train, so confirm yours with the Nursing Clinical Coordinator before the packet goes in.
My West Virginia site says USI needs state approval. Is that right?
It turns on numbers, not on you. The WVHEPC guide exempts NC-SARA schools like USI unless 10 or more of their students train at one site, and the RN board's approval form is meant for pre-licensure programs. Forward the site's question to the Nursing Clinical Coordinator so USI can answer it directly.
Can an NP in their first three years of prescribing precept me?
AANP describes the collaboration requirement as governing the NP's prescribing, not whether the NP may teach. USI applies its own preceptor standard, which includes a minimum stretch of advanced practice experience, and the Graduate Clinical Liaison decides. An NP a couple of years into practice can clear that bar.
I live near Martinsburg. Can I train in Maryland?
It can work: USI needs an approved preceptor and site there and a license that is valid in Maryland, a compact state since 2018. Maryland's board rules are on the Maryland guide. Pennsylvania sites raise a different question because USI bars Pennsylvania residents from its NP tracks, so ask the Nursing Clinical Coordinator before pursuing one.
