Montana clinicals for USI's online NP students
Montana is among the more straightforward states for University of Southern Indiana online students. All of USI's nursing programs take Montana residents, and the Montana Board of Nursing exempts graduate and RN-to-BSN programs from its approval step for clinicals, asking only that each student's license work in Montana.

Board approval stops at pre-licensure
The formal gate in Montana, ARM 24.159.608, is built for out-of-state schools that prepare people for a first nursing license. Such a school's director must write to the Board, sign the letter, and enclose a thick bundle: evidence the school is approved and accredited, who will precept and teach, how faculty will supervise, the agreement with the facility, and confirmation from Montana's in-state program directors that their own students keep their clinical seats.
USI's graduate tracks and RN-to-BSN never pass through that gate. According to the Board's FAQ, the school's single duty is checking that each student's nursing license works in Montana, since Montana patients are on the receiving end. That FAQ also spares USI faculty a Montana license so long as their role is advising you and your preceptor; hands-on patient care is where the requirement begins.
Preceptors across a state of long drives
AANP rates Montana a full practice state. No metro reaches 200,000 people: Billings leads at about 194,000, Bozeman and Missoula sit near 129,000 each, and Helena falls under 100,000. Missoula's St. Patrick Hospital belongs to Providence. Billings has two big hospital names, Billings Clinic (now one system with Logan Health) and St. Vincent Regional, an Intermountain Health hospital. Benefis Health System rounds out the major employers. Treat this as a sketch of where Montana NPs practice, not a list of sites waiting for USI students.
USI's sequence does not change in Montana. You locate the preceptor and site near home, the Graduate Clinical Liaison signs off, and the facility executes USI's Clinical Education Agreement. USI also expects personal travel for every clinical course. AGACNP students need acute care, and critical care or hospitalist work is preferred in NRSG 637, so chart drive times to hospitals before Fall.
Licensing: the compact carries over
Compact membership arrived in Montana with its January 2018 implementation. The Board's RN licensing page confirms the practical upshot: an RN whose multistate privilege comes from a different member state can practice in Montana on it, no Montana license required. Does USI need Montana Board approval before my NP clinicals?
Montana's Board lets graduate programs hold clinicals inside Montana without seeking its sign-off, reserving its approval rule for first-license schools. What it does expect is a nursing license that works in Montana. USI's own approvals still come first: preceptor, site and Clinical Education Agreement, all cleared before any hours.
Does my USI clinical faculty need a Montana license to work with my preceptor?
Only if they treat Montana patients themselves. Out-of-state faculty whose role is advising a student and preceptor are exempt, per the Board's FAQ. USI faculty validate competency through conference calls, site visits as needed and, at times, video recordings, so ask your course faculty how they plan to work with a Montana site.
Can a student living in Idaho or Wyoming train at a Montana site?
Idaho is open to every USI nursing program and belongs to the compact, so an Idaho multistate license lets you practice in Montana. Wyoming residents cannot enroll in USI's online NP programs (Wyoming). Either way, ask the Nursing Clinical Coordinator before planning hours outside your home state.
Can I relocate to Montana during a USI program?
Yes; no USI program bars Montana residents, so enrollment carries on. Notify the Program Chair and APRN Director ahead of the move, check that your license works in Montana, and start looking for the next preceptor near your new address well before the term.
