Studying at USI from Idaho: NP clinicals close to home
The University of Southern Indiana takes Idaho residents into every online nursing program it offers, and its disclosure marks Idaho as met for each NP track. Idaho's rules let an enrolled APRN student work at APRN level on an RN license when the curriculum calls for it, and compact membership keeps licensing simple.

How USI's table treats Idaho
Look up Idaho in USI's Professional Licensure Disclosure (dated "Updated Fall 2025") and you find it under "Meets Requirements" for every NP program, with no Enrollment Not Allowed cell naming it. A move here in the middle of a program keeps you inside a state USI recognizes.

Idaho's rules for APRN students from out of state
Idaho's Board of Nursing works through DOPL, the state's occupational licensing division. Its student provision, IDAPA 24.34.01.100.12.a, clears you to work at APRN level when three things line up: an RN license or multistate privilege good in Idaho, matriculation in an APRN program with national accreditation, and APRN-level work that is built into the coursework. Idaho Code 54-1412 layers on a broader exemption: students of approved programs acting within formal instruction are excused from licensing.
What Idaho lacks is a written procedure for placements by schools based elsewhere. Its program-approval rules (IDAPA 24.34.01.150, backed by Idaho Code 54-1406) speak to programs offered inside Idaho, and the Board's note for online and out-of-state schools simply refers them to DOPL's licensing staff. That exchange is USI's to have, so ask the Nursing Clinical Coordinator whether it has happened before your first Idaho rotation.
One Board policy does touch your preceptor. Under HP-BON-Education 1 (spring 2024), a preceptor's license has to match or outrank the credential you are studying for. If you are counting on a PA, whom USI accepts for FNP and AGACNP, ask how USI reads that policy (PA preceptors).
Where Idaho NP students look
AANP counts Idaho among the full practice states. Boise City is the dominant metro at roughly 864,000 people, several times the size of Idaho Falls, Twin Falls or Coeur d'Alene. Among Idaho employers the big names are St. Luke's and Saint Alphonsus, each running a full health system, while Coeur d'Alene has Kootenai Health. Take them as a sketch of where Idaho NPs practice, not as sites that have signed on for USI students.
Spokane sits just across the line from North Idaho, yet Washington's approvals cover Washington residents, and an Idaho resident would need a special exception there, so build your plan on Idaho sites (Washington guide).
Your license: Idaho is a compact state
Idaho has been a working compact member since January 19, 2018. A multistate license issued by Idaho travels to the other compact states, and the student rule above is satisfied by that license or by a privilege from another compact state. USI's own test is a clear RN license valid wherever your clinical hours happen, and FNP and PMHNP telehealth hours depend on the patient's state (RN license guide). Questions USI students ask
Does Idaho have to approve USI before I do clinicals there?
Idaho has written no placement procedure for schools based elsewhere; the Board's page just refers online and out-of-state schools to DOPL's licensing office. Because any approval would sit with USI rather than with you, ask the Nursing Clinical Coordinator to confirm the position before your first Idaho rotation.
Do I need an Idaho APRN license while I am a USI student?
Student practice runs on your RN credential. Idaho's student rule covers APRN-level work by an enrolled student in a nationally accredited APRN program, provided you hold an RN license or multistate privilege good in Idaho and the work belongs to the curriculum. Keep that RN license unencumbered, which USI requires in any case.
Who can precept a USI PMHNP student in Idaho?
The same people as anywhere: a PMHNP or a licensed psychiatrist, certified in the specialty, with at least a year of advanced practice and an unencumbered license where they practice. Idaho's policy that a preceptor's license match or outrank your target credential is satisfied by either one. See USI's preceptor rules.
Is moving to Idaho during a USI program a problem?
Idaho's open status means relocating there leaves your enrollment intact. Give the Program Chair and APRN Director notice in advance, make sure your license reaches Idaho, and restart the preceptor search around your new address early. The relocation guide lists the steps.
