Washington residents and USI's online nursing programs
Washington is a split state for the University of Southern Indiana. Residents may enroll in the MSN FNP, AGACNP and PMHNP tracks, but USI closes its post-master's certificates and BSN-to-DNP APRN tracks to them. For MSN students, WABON's rule on out-of-state distance programs then shapes where and how clinical hours can happen.

Which USI programs Washington residents can join
USI's Professional Licensure Disclosure, labeled "Updated Fall 2025", has a column headed "Enrollment Not Allowed for Residents of These States (due to State Nursing Regulations)". WA appears there for ten program rows: all three post-master's certificates, the BSN-to-DNP FNP, AGACNP and PMHNP (plus the closed Adult-Gerontology CNS row), the post-MSN DNP in Advanced Nursing Practice, and both leadership MSNs.

"Meets" beside a closed row is not a contradiction: the curriculum satisfies Washington's education standards, yet residents still cannot enroll. Two consequences follow. An NP who finishes USI's MSN while living in Washington has no USI certificate route to a second specialty, and a certificate or BSN-to-DNP student who moves here enters a state USI does not recognize for that program, which USI says ends the ability to continue (moving mid-program).
WABON's approval rule for distance programs
Washington treats a distance program from another state as a guest that needs an invitation. Under WAC 246-840-571, the Washington State Board of Nursing (WABON) must sign off on the program itself before any of its students start clinical or practice hours in the state. To get there, USI would have to apply, prove its program matches Washington's standards, oversee and grade its students while they train in Washington, stay nationally accredited, and send in a report each year. The resulting roster lists RN-to-BSN, MSN and NP tracks, and the edition in our research carries a September 21, 2026 date.
Residency is the second gate: WABON limits approved placements to Washington residents and treats anyone else as a one-off exception. Our research does not show whether USI is on that roster, so read the current edition or ask the Nursing Clinical Coordinator before promising a site anything. The rules may shift, too, since WABON filed a CR-101 in December 2025 to revisit its whole block of education rules, clinical placement barriers included.
Who may precept you, and where Washington NPs practice
AANP lists Washington as full practice. Washington's education rules bar an ARNP student's family and personal friends from precepting, a wider circle than USI's relatives-and-partners rule, and they call for an active ARNP, MD or DO license without encumbrance, or another state's equivalent. USI allows PAs for FNP and AGACNP, but because Washington's list names only those three, check before counting on a PA (PA preceptors).
The Puget Sound metro, Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue, holds around 4.2 million people, more than Spokane, the Tri-Cities around Kennewick-Richland and the Vancouver side of the Portland metro put together. Providence, with Providence Swedish folded in, is headquartered in Renton. MultiCare Health System, PeaceHealth, UW Medicine and Virginia Mason Franciscan Health are other large employers of Washington NPs. As for incentives, WABON's Student Nurse Preceptorship Grant shuts out programs from other states, wherever the hours take place.
Licensing since the 2024 compact start
Washington is a recent compact recruit, with implementation dated January 31, 2024; a multistate license issued by WABON therefore reaches other compact states as well. USI's rule is still a clear RN license in each state that hosts your hours, and FNP and PMHNP telehealth hours depend on where the patient is (RN license guide). Washington has not enacted the APRN Compact.

Questions USI students ask
Can I enroll in USI's post-master's PMHNP certificate from Washington?
Not while you live there. USI lists Washington as enrollment-not-allowed for all three post-master's certificates, and for the BSN-to-DNP APRN tracks and the post-MSN DNP too. The MSN PMHNP, FNP and AGACNP tracks remain open to Washington residents. The licensure disclosure guide lays out every list.
Does WABON's approved roster include USI?
The research behind this page does not say. WABON publishes the roster (the edition we saw is dated September 21, 2026) and asks programs already placing students in Washington without approval to contact its Education Unit. Check the roster, then confirm with the Nursing Clinical Coordinator before you approach a preceptor, since approval must come first.
I live in Idaho or Oregon. Could my USI clinicals be in Washington?
Washington's approvals are written for Washington residents, and anything else is an exception WABON grants individually. A Coeur d'Alene student should therefore build an Idaho plan first (Idaho guide). Oregon residents are shut out earlier, because USI's MSN NP tracks do not enroll them (Oregon).
Could a close friend who is an ARNP serve as my Washington preceptor?
Under the state's education rules that friendship disqualifies them: family members and personal friends of an ARNP student may not precept that student. USI's own rule excludes relatives and anyone in a relationship with you, and it adds certification and experience requirements covered in USI's preceptor rules.
