New Mexico residents can enroll in all of the University of Southern Indiana's online nursing programs, and USI's table says the NP routes meet New Mexico's educational requirements. One state rule deserves a question before you plan: New Mexico asks programs whose clinical placements in the state run past a single semester to apply for board approval, and USI's NP clinicals span three.

USI's Professional Licensure Disclosure ("Updated Fall 2025") has no New Mexico entry in any "Enrollment Not Allowed" cell, and it places NM under "Meets Requirements" for each APRN program.

The more-than-one-semester clause
Buried in the New Mexico Board of Nursing's education rules (Part 16.12.3 of the state's administrative code, section 11) is a clause that matters for USI's calendar. A school whose clinical or field placements inside New Mexico outlast one semester must seek the board's approval for those placements, and a school approved by another state's board has to meet New Mexico's minimum program standards as well.
The open question is scope. That part of the code frames itself around programs leading to New Mexico licensure and never singles out graduate NP or RN completion programs. USI's MSN NP clinicals stretch over Fall, Spring and Summer, so if the clause does reach graduate programs, the application is USI's to make, not yours. Before you lock in a New Mexico site, ask the Nursing Clinical Coordinator (usi1nursing@usi.edu) how USI reads the rule and where any approval stands.

Full practice from Albuquerque to Farmington

Albuquerque is by far the largest search area at about 925,000 people, with Las Cruces, Santa Fe and Farmington well behind. Statewide, students weigh Lovelace Health System, Presbyterian Healthcare Services and UNM Health System, the last being New Mexico's one academic medical center; in Santa Fe, CHRISTUS St. Vincent Regional Medical Center is part of CHRISTUS Health. Treat these as places NPs work, not as sites set up for USI students. No New Mexico preceptor incentive appears in our research.
Your RN license in a compact state with busy borders
New Mexico nurses can hold a multistate compact license, which the board has billed as its own fee item since June 1, 2026, so confirm which kind yours is. The APRN Compact has not passed here. Every neighbor is a compact state too, but USI's enrollment picture differs next door: Texas and Utah are open, Oklahoma and Arizona residents cannot join the MSN NP tracks, and Colorado is the table's gap state. Questions USI students ask
Will USI admit a New Mexico resident to its online AGACNP?
Yes. USI's disclosure does not list New Mexico under Enrollment Not Allowed for the MSN AGACNP, and it says the curriculum meets New Mexico's educational requirements. Your hours will need an acute care preceptor; the AGACNP program guide covers the three clinical courses.
Does New Mexico require USI to be approved for my clinical placements?
Possibly. New Mexico wants board approval when a school's clinical placements in the state last longer than a semester, but the rule is written around programs leading to New Mexico licensure and is silent on graduate NP programs. Ask USI's Nursing Clinical Coordinator how USI applies it before you settle on a clinic.
Do I need a separate New Mexico license if I live in Texas and train in Las Cruces?
Usually not. Texas and New Mexico are both compact states, so a Texas multistate license covers a New Mexico site. USI still wants that license unencumbered, and the site still needs USI's approval and a signed Clinical Education Agreement before your first hour.
Who can precept a USI PMHNP student in New Mexico?
USI allows only a psychiatric mental health NP or a licensed psychiatrist for NRSG 653, NRSG 655 and NRSG 657, all in outpatient mental health settings. Under New Mexico's full-practice law, a PMHNP preceptor there works on their own authority.
