Alabama and the University of Southern Indiana's online nurse practitioner programs
Living in Alabama rules you out of the online FNP, AGACNP and PMHNP programs at the University of Southern Indiana, its post-master's certificates and its nurse practitioner doctorates, although USI's own table says each curriculum satisfies Alabama. What USI's disclosure says for Alabama
In the licensure table USI dates "Updated Fall 2025," AL turns up under "Enrollment Not Allowed for Residents of These States (due to State Nursing Regulations)" fourteen times across sixteen nursing rows. Only the Evansville campus BSN and the Organizational and Systems Leadership doctorate leave Alabama out.

Why "Meets" beside a ban? The curriculum column is USI's judgment that its coursework would clear the Alabama Board of Nursing's education bar; the enrollment column is about residence and settles admission. Alabama's paperwork for schools based elsewhere
Alabama asks the school, not the student, to file first. Ala. Admin. Code r. 610-X-3-.09 sets a 15-day lead time for an out-of-state APRN program: before a student's first clinical day in the state, the school sends the board a letter of intent with its approval papers. The letter identifies the students, the clinician supervising them and the facility, with license numbers and a sign-off from the facility's nursing chief, and the school pays Alabama a yearly program fee on top.
Without board approval and a paid fee, the ABN's FAQ says, no student may train in Alabama. USI's public pages are silent on whether it files for Alabama sites, so a student in Tennessee or Georgia offered an Alabama preceptor should ask the Graduate Clinical Liaison about it before planning a semester there.
Practice rules, big systems and the rural tax credit
AANP grades Alabama as reduced practice. Alabama NPs must keep a formal, state-policed collaboration with a physician, with the medical board sharing NP oversight alongside nursing, so an Alabama preceptor brings a collaborating physician into your semester too.
Birmingham's UAB Medicine, Huntsville Hospital Health System, Montgomery's Baptist Health and two Mobile systems, Infirmary Health and the University of South Alabama's USA Health, dominate the four biggest metros: a map of where Alabama NP students hunt, not a list of USI sites.
APTIP gives community-based preceptors in underserved rural Alabama a credit against state income tax through September 29, 2031, and the Alabama Statewide AHEC Program Office administers it. Rotations count only when the school sits inside Alabama, so precepting a USI student earns nothing under it.
Licensing for Alabama clinicals
Alabama began honoring multistate compact licenses on January 1, 2020. Graduate students who train in Alabama must hold, per the board's FAQ, either a clean Alabama RN license or a multistate license that a fellow compact state issued, which squares with USI's handbook. Alabama has no APRN Compact law.

Questions USI students ask
Can I be admitted to USI's online FNP while I live in Alabama?
No. USI's admission rules turn away applicants whose home state is outside its authorized list, and Alabama sits in the ban column for the MSN FNP, AGACNP and PMHNP, the three certificates and every nurse practitioner doctorate. That changes only if you move to a state USI enrolls or USI rewrites its Alabama cells.
Can an Alabama RN finish a bachelor's online through USI?
No. Alabama is one of the nine states on the RN-to-BSN row's ban list, so USI's bachelor's completion program is closed to an Alabama address. Among the online rows, only the leadership BSN-to-DNP, which starts from a BSN, skips Alabama.
Could my USI clinicals be in Alabama if I live in Tennessee?
Only once USI has completed Alabama's filing, which must be on file with the board 15 or more days before you start there and comes with the school's annual fee. You would also need your home state's multistate license, if it issues one, or an Alabama license. Ask the Graduate Clinical Liaison first.
Does USI's military exception cover orders to Alabama?
USI names active military status as the one exception to its relocation rule. If orders send you to Alabama, tell the Program Chair and APRN Director right away and get their answer in writing for your track. Any Alabama clinical would still need the state filing and a license that covers Alabama.
