Studying with USI from Florida: enrollment, preceptors and licensing
Yes, you can study with the University of Southern Indiana from Florida. USI's Professional Licensure Disclosure, marked "Updated Fall 2025," keeps Florida off every Enrollment Not Allowed list and says each APRN curriculum meets Florida's educational requirements. Your hours then happen in Florida, with a preceptor you find and USI approves, in a state where many nurse practitioners work under a physician protocol.

Protocol practice and who can precept you
On AANP's map Florida restricts NP practice: a subset of Florida nurse practitioners work under a physician protocol throughout their careers, though some qualify for an exemption. Ask whether the NP you approach works under one, because that physician may be a preceptor option too.
That matters because USI's accepted preceptors differ by track. FNP students may learn from FNPs, PAs or primary care physicians in NRSG 643, AGACNP students from NPs, PAs, MDs or DOs in acute care, and PMHNP students only from a PMHNP or a licensed psychiatrist. In a Florida family practice, a protocol physician who sees patients at your site can be a second route to a yes. Credentials and experience rules are on the preceptor requirements page.
Florida's board, the TEACH fund and where students look
Florida Statutes s. 464.019 sets the terms for schools that offer prelicensure nursing programs inside Florida, and that is the kind of program Florida's Board of Nursing says it approves. Our research turned up no Florida rule asking a graduate school elsewhere, USI included, to register its APRN students or get permission before they log hours in Florida. The approvals you plan around are USI's: the Graduate Clinical Liaison's sign-off and a signed Clinical Education Agreement.
Florida's TEACH fund (s. 409.91256), managed by AHCA, pays certain community clinics and nonprofits for student hours they host, subject to appropriation, but only when the student attends an accredited Florida-based school. A USI rotation sits outside it.
Searches usually begin where the people are. The Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach metro alone counted roughly 6.4 million residents in 2025 Census figures, and Jacksonville, Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford and the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater area are each large markets too. Students in those regions reach out to UF Health, to Baptist Health South Florida, to BayCare, to HCA Florida Healthcare practices and to the Florida-based AdventHealth, each with its own student process.
Your license in a compact state
Since January 19, 2018, Florida has issued licenses under the Nurse Licensure Compact. USI asks for a clean RN license that is good in every state hosting your hours, so a Florida multistate license covers Florida sites. Holding a license from some other compact state instead? For FNP and PMHNP telehealth hours, the patient's location decides which license counts. Georgia and Alabama are compact states too, while a video visit with someone in a non-compact state calls for that state's license. And since USI may ask students to show clinical competency on its Evansville campus, leave room for a possible trip north.

Questions USI students ask
Can Florida residents enroll in USI's online nurse practitioner programs?
Yes, according to USI's current table. The Professional Licensure Disclosure, labeled Updated Fall 2025, leaves Florida out of the Enrollment Not Allowed column for every nursing program and marks the MSN FNP, AGACNP and PMHNP rows as meeting Florida's requirements. Read your program's row again before applying, since USI revises the page.
Do Florida regulators have to approve my USI clinical site?
Our research found no such step for graduate students. Florida's approval law is aimed at prelicensure schools, and nothing turned up that makes an out-of-state APRN program file with the Board first. What you do plan for is USI's approval, the site's signed agreement and whatever onboarding the site itself requires.
Can the physician my Florida NP works with be my preceptor?
For FNP and AGACNP students, often yes: USI accepts primary care physicians in the first FNP course, specialty physicians later in the sequence, and MDs or DOs in acute care for AGACNP. PMHNP students need a PMHNP or a licensed psychiatrist. Whoever it is must pass USI's approval before your first clinical hour.
I'm moving to Florida mid-program. What changes?
Florida is open to every USI nursing program, so the move leaves your enrollment intact. USI still expects you to tell the Program Chair and APRN Director before you relocate, and you will need a license valid in Florida plus a newly approved preceptor for your next course.
