North Carolina clinicals for USI nurse practitioner students
North Carolina residents can enroll in any online nursing program the University of Southern Indiana offers, and USI's licensure disclosure ("Updated Fall 2025") marks each APRN track as meeting North Carolina's educational requirements. North Carolina's nursing board keeps graduate programs outside its approval work, with one step worth knowing: a student whose RN license is single-state and issued elsewhere must contact the Board before training in North Carolina.

There are no exceptions to read around here. North Carolina is missing from every enrollment ban on USI's nursing table, and each row that leads to an APRN license lists it under "Meets Requirements."

What the North Carolina Board of Nursing oversees
North Carolina's Board of Nursing draws a firm line around its education authority. Graduate nursing programs, in-state or out, get neither its approval nor its disapproval, and its education FAQ places RN-BSN, master's and doctoral study outside its jurisdiction. The rule in 21 NCAC 36 .0233, covering programs from other states, is about pre-licensure students, for whom a North Carolina agency files at least 30 days before they arrive. A licensed nurse in graduate study sits outside that process.
Two points do reach you. Hold only a single-state license from another state? Then the Board wants you to contact its Licensure Department, via the Email Us form on its site, for the requirements before any clinical there. It also observes that North Carolina has been a SARA state since June 2016 and that a SARA-approved college's students may be able to complete clinicals in the state. USI is an NC-SARA member.
The Joint Subcommittee and your preceptor
AANP counts North Carolina as restricted. NPs there practice under a physician agreement that lasts their whole career, and a Joint Subcommittee combining members of the nursing and medical boards governs NP licensure. Any NP who precepts you works with that physician arrangement in place.
USI sets eligibility by track, as the preceptor requirements page explains. In FNP and AGACNP courses, a physician or PA in the same office can join as an additional preceptor once USI approves a separate Preceptor Agreement for them (how additional preceptors work). PMHNP students stay with a PMHNP or a licensed psychiatrist.
From Charlotte to Raleigh: where students look
The Charlotte-Concord-Gastonia metro, the state's largest, reaches into South Carolina, but roughly 2.5 million of its residents live on the northern side. Raleigh-Cary counts about 1.6 million, and Greensboro-High Point and Winston-Salem each top 700,000. Students write to Duke Health, to ECU Health, to Novant Health, to UNC Health and to Atrium Health, part of Advocate Health, and some look at public health settings under the Division of Public Health. Every organization runs its own student intake, and research recorded no North Carolina preceptor incentive.
Licensing for North Carolina hours
North Carolina's compact participation dates to January 19, 2018, and a multistate license keeps you clear of the Board's contact step. USI separately wants an unencumbered RN license good in every state where you train; the RN license guide covers how to confirm a multistate privilege with the Nursing Clinical Coordinator.

Questions USI students ask
Is there a North Carolina Board step before my USI clinicals?
Only when your license is single-state and issued outside North Carolina; then the Board expects you to contact its Licensure Department for the requirements first. A North Carolina or multistate license skips that step, and your path runs through USI: the Preceptor Packet, the site's Clinical Education Agreement and the approval email.
Does my North Carolina site need to file the 30-day agency request?
That filing under 21 NCAC 36 .0233 exists for unlicensed pre-licensure students whose schools are based outside North Carolina, and the host agency submits it. USI's NP students are licensed RNs in a graduate program, which the Board treats as outside its education jurisdiction. If a site thinks otherwise, ask the Nursing Clinical Coordinator to respond.
Can North Carolina residents enroll in USI's certificates and BSN-to-DNP?
Yes. The certificates and the BSN-to-DNP APRN tracks leave North Carolina off their Enrollment Not Allowed lists, just as the MSN does, and each row marks the curriculum as meeting North Carolina's requirements. The table is dated Updated Fall 2025, so check your row again before applying.
Can I train in South Carolina or Virginia while living in North Carolina?
USI's conditions are a license valid where you train and an approved preceptor and site, wherever they are. Both neighbors belong to the compact and are open to USI's programs; their own rules are on the South Carolina and Virginia guides. The site signs its own Clinical Education Agreement with USI either way.
