New Jersey nurses in USI's online NP programs
The University of Southern Indiana admits New Jersey residents to every one of its online nursing programs, and its disclosure marks the NP curricula as meeting New Jersey's standards. The catch sits next door: New York, Pennsylvania and Delaware are all closed to USI's MSN NP tracks, so plan your clinicals on the New Jersey side of the state line.

USI's New Jersey entry, Fall 2025
Scan every row of USI's nursing disclosure ("Updated Fall 2025") and New Jersey never shows up in the Enrollment Not Allowed column. Each APRN program also lists New Jersey among the states where the curriculum Meets Requirements.

Reduced practice: what joint protocols mean for your preceptor
The AANP places New Jersey among reduced practice states. A New Jersey NP who orders drugs or devices does so under joint protocols agreed with a collaborating physician, so any NP preceptor who prescribes in front of you works within that arrangement. It governs the NP's own license; USI's approval turns on its separate preceptor standard, and FNP and AGACNP students can also learn from PAs and physicians (PA and physician preceptors).
New Jersey's nursing education rules (Subchapter 1 of N.J.A.C. 13:37) deal with programs run by New Jersey institutions. Their one clinical-agency provision, section 1.10(c), covers the reverse case: New Jersey schools placing students outside the state. Nothing located in those rules makes a school from elsewhere seek approval or file notice before clinicals begin. If a hospital's education office raises the question, route it to the Nursing Clinical Coordinator.
Two big metros, and state lines running through them
New Jersey's largest population centers cross state lines. Census figures for 2025 place about 7.1 million state residents in the metro it shares with New York City and 1.4 million more in the Philadelphia one. Two smaller metros, Trenton-Princeton and Atlantic City-Hammonton, lie entirely in-state at roughly 400,000 and 370,000 people. Students commonly approach Camden's Cooper University Health Care or Virtua Health, and also RWJBarnabas Health, Atlantic Health System or Hackensack Meridian Health, each as a place to ask rather than an arranged USI site.
The trap is the commute. A preceptor across the Hudson or the Delaware practices in a state USI closes to MSN NP residents, and New York stays outside the Nurse Licensure Compact, so settle any site across the river with the Graduate Clinical Liaison before you invest time in it.
Licensing for New Jersey clinicals and telehealth
New Jersey's compact participation started November 15, 2021. USI requires your RN license to be unencumbered in each state where you train; at a New Jersey site, a license New Jersey issued works, as does a multistate license issued where you live, if that state is also a member. USI's handbook is silent on compact privileges, so confirm your plan with the Nursing Clinical Coordinator. More is on the RN license guide.
Telehealth needs extra thought here. FNP and PMHNP students may count limited live video hours while seated beside the preceptor, but the license has to match the patient's location. A northern New Jersey psychiatric practice may see New York patients on screen, and those encounters count only if you hold a New York license. The caps are on telehealth clinical hours.

Questions USI students ask
Can a New Jersey resident enroll in USI's online FNP program?
Yes. New Jersey is absent from every Enrollment Not Allowed list, and USI's Fall 2025 table places the MSN FNP, like the AGACNP and PMHNP, under Meets Requirements for New Jersey. The certificates and BSN-to-DNP APRN tracks read the same. USI updates the table periodically, so recheck it before you apply.
Can I do my USI clinicals in New York City or Philadelphia?
Possibly, but clear it first. USI's MSN NP tracks do not admit New York or Pennsylvania residents, though the table speaks to residence and says nothing about clinical location. You would also have to be licensed as an RN there, and in New York only a New York license does that. The Graduate Clinical Liaison decides whether such a site can be approved.
Does New Jersey's reduced practice status limit who can precept me?
It shapes how NPs prescribe, since New Jersey ties an NP's ordering of drugs and devices to joint protocols shared with a physician collaborator. USI's decision instead weighs the preceptor's license, certification and advanced-practice experience, as set out on who can precept you. The Graduate Clinical Liaison approves each one.
What if I move from New Jersey to Pennsylvania during the program?
Pennsylvania appears on USI's Enrollment Not Allowed list for the MSN NP tracks, the three certificates and the BSN-to-DNP APRN routes. USI says moving into a state its graduate program does not recognize will stop you continuing coursework, with active military the exception. Tell the Program Chair and APRN Director before any move, and read the Pennsylvania page.
