USI's post-master's PMHNP certificate: 28 credits and a full 750 hours
The University of Southern Indiana's online Post-Master's Certificate in Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner is 28 credits and starts each May. Whatever clinical hours your first master's included, USI credits none of them: you complete the same 750 direct hours as MSN students, in NRSG 653, NRSG 655 and NRSG 657, precepted by a psychiatric NP or a psychiatrist.

What the certificate includes
The 2026-27 Graduate Bulletin builds the certificate from two blocks: a 9-credit clinical core and the same 19-credit PMHNP specialty the MSN uses. Because you already hold a master's, the MSN nursing core (NRSG 601 to NRSG 606) drops away. USI's program page describes 28 credit hours in the specialty "with additional direct clinical hours," meaning the 750 hours sit on top of the coursework.

The program is fully online and admits in May only: USI's page shows May 2027 as the next start, with applications due that April, then May 2028. You need a master's in nursing from a school holding national and regional accreditation, a GPA of 3.00 or higher, an RN license with no encumbrance, and three references with their contact details.
The gap analysis and what can transfer
Every applicant receives a gap analysis, USI's comparison of your earlier graduate work against the certificate. Only the clinical core can be reduced by it. The three courses eligible are graduate-level pharmacology, pathophysiology and advanced health assessment from an accredited school, and each must be under five years old unless you can demonstrate current advanced clinical practice.
Pharmacology carries one more condition: you need prescriptive authority that is active today in the state where you practice. The program page limits transfer to 9 graduate credits, which is exactly those three courses, and says APRN specialty courses from another school will not be considered. The bulletin adds that the specialty courses must be completed at USI, so every certificate student takes NRSG 651 through NRSG 657 here.
750 new hours, whatever you logged before
USI's Full Admission Requirements page leaves no room for argument: the post-master's APRN certificate credits zero prior clinical hours. An FNP with hundreds of family practice hours, or a nurse educator with practicum time, begins the psychiatric specialty at zero. Plan it as a full clinical program rather than a top-up: three semesters of supervised psychiatric practice, logged in Typhon, co-signed by your preceptors and evaluated by faculty at midterm and at the end of each course.

The course pages give the dates and setting rules for each semester: NRSG 653, NRSG 655 and NRSG 657. Telehealth can supply up to 150 of the 750 under the rule MSN students follow, with you and your preceptor in one room at the approved site.
Preceptors when you already practice
Experience in another specialty does not widen the preceptor pool. Only psychiatric NPs and psychiatrists qualify, and each must hold specialty certification, have practiced at the advanced level for a year or longer, and sign USI's agreement. A family NP colleague who manages depression in primary care cannot precept you, however skilled.
If you already work in health care, note what USI does and does not say about your own employer. It publishes no rule against precepting there, its advice for stuck students starts with checking whether your own employer could supply a preceptor, and it says clinical sites are not to be used for workplace orientation. USI's malpractice coverage applies while you function in the student role, so keep clinical hours clearly apart from paid shifts. The workplace page covers how students set that up.
Sequence, pace and the three-year limit
Certificate students start in May, and USI publishes no sample plan, so your gap analysis and plan of study set the order. The course terms fix the clinical rhythm: NRSG 651 in Summer, NRSG 653 in Fall, NRSG 655 in Spring and NRSG 657 the following Summer, with NRSG 623 and NRSG 651 both needed before NRSG 653.
The certificate must be completed within three years, each course needs a B or higher, and progression stops after more than one withdrawal. Each specialty course runs in a single term, so a Fall without an approved preceptor can push the rest of the sequence back by a year. That is the strongest reason to start the search the winter before your first clinical Fall.
Which states the certificate accepts
The certificate's Enrollment Not Allowed list is not the MSN's. USI's Professional Licensure Disclosure gives the three post-master's certificates one shared row, summarized here.

Mississippi deserves a closer look. It is missing from the certificate's ban list, yet the table places it among the states where the program does not meet requirements, and USI's admission page makes anyone living where the program falls short of licensure rules ineligible. Confirm your state on the current licensure disclosure before you apply, and remember that clinicals in any state need an RN license there with no encumbrance.
Figures that changed for 2026-27
The PMHNP certificate grew from 26 credits in 2025-26 to 28, and its clinical hours from 630 to 750, when USI rebuilt graduate nursing under the NRSG prefix. USI's program-finder listings still showed 26 credits when this page was checked in September 2026. Both the bulletin and the program page give 28, and the bulletin is the catalog of record.
The hour change matters more than the credits. Under the old split of 135, 225 and 270, the psychiatric courses asked for 120 fewer hours than the 200, 250 and 300 you will now complete. The 750-hour page explains the rebuild for every NP track. If you were advised under the 2025-26 figures, ask for a current plan of study before you commit a preceptor to specific semesters.

Questions USI students ask
Can my FNP clinical hours count toward USI's PMHNP certificate?
No. USI credits no clinical hours toward any post-master's APRN certificate, whatever specialty they came from. Your earlier coursework may still shorten the clinical core through the gap analysis, but the 750 direct hours in NRSG 653, NRSG 655 and NRSG 657 are completed new, with a PMHNP or licensed psychiatrist precepting.
When does the USI PMHNP certificate start?
May only. USI's program page lists May 2027, with applications due in April 2027, and May 2028 after that. Because the first PMHNP clinical course runs in Fall, a May start gives you at least one summer of coursework before direct hours begin, which is the right time to line up your first preceptor.
Can a psychiatrist at my current employer precept me?
USI publishes no rule against it. The psychiatrist must meet every standard, from specialty certification and a year of advanced practice to an unencumbered license and a signed USI agreement, and cannot be a relative or partner. Your hours must be student clinical time, not orientation to your job, and the site still signs its own Clinical Education Agreement.
Is the certificate the same program as the MSN PMHNP?
The specialty is identical: same four courses, same 750 hours, same preceptor and telehealth rules. The differences sit around it. The certificate skips the MSN nursing core, admits only in May, allows three years to finish, credits no earlier clinical hours and has its own list of states whose residents cannot enroll. Will USI accept my earlier pharmacology course?
Possibly, through the gap analysis. USI considers graduate pharmacology from an accredited institution if it was completed within five years or you can validate current advanced practice, and you must also show current, active prescriptive authority in your state. Pathophysiology and advanced health assessment follow the same five-year test without the prescriptive authority condition.
